Timothy Walker is Horti
Praefectus or Director of The University of Oxford’s
Botanic Garden and
Arboretum
and holds a lectureship in
Plant Conservation at Somerville College. He studied
Botany at University College and after graduating in
1980, joined the staff of The Botanic Garden as a
trainee gardener. Timothy has just presented a 3 x 1
hour series for BBC4 Botany: A Blooming History made by
BBC Scotland.
His current post involves a mixture of teaching,
administration, begging and curating of the National
Collection of euphorbias but no gardening - this happens
at weekends in his wife’s garden , if allowed. In 1997
Walker was elected to the Ernest Cook Lecturership in
Plant Conservation at Somerville College, Oxford. He has
visited North Yorkshire, Wales, Ireland, Portugal,
Spain, Turkey, Sri Lanka, China, Japan, Australia,
Seychelles, South Africa, Canada and America in search
of plants growing in their habitats. He is one of the
popular garden speakers and travels all over the UK
giving his talks.
Timothy has a passionate belief that scientists have a
duty to explain their subjects to the public in a way
that they can understand. His professional interests
reflect the hybrid nature of his training and range from
plant conservation and systematics to the use of colour
in English gardens. To this end the Botanic Garden's
public education program reaches more than 20,000 people
each year and has won four gold medals at the Chelsea
Flower Show.
