Iain Stewart is Professor of Geoscience Communication in
the School of Earth, Ocean & Environmental Sciences at
the University of Plymouth.
Iain graduated in 1986 with a degree in Geography &
Geology from Strathclyde University, Glasgow, and moved
to the University of Bristol to begin doctoral research
on the geology of earthquakes in the Mediterranean.
After finishing his PhD in 1990, Iain lectured in
Geoscience at Brunel University in West London until
2002, when left for an honorary Research Fellow post at
Glasgow University and the opportunity to get television
projects off the ground; he joined the University of
Plymouth in 2004.
Iain’s research interests in earthquake science and
geo-hazards featured in two BBC Horizon specials - The
Search of Ancient Helike and Earthquake Storms. In 2004,
after becoming the first geologist on the science team
in the fourth BBC2 series Rough Science, he explored
geology and culture of the Mediterranean world on his
BBC2/4 series, Journeys From The Centre Of The Earth.
This was followed by Journeys Into The Ring of Fire
(BBC2/4, 2006) and the BAFTA-nominated landmark series
Earth: The Power of the Planet (BBC2, 2007, Earth: The
Climate Wars,) and in 2009 the critically acclaimed How
Earth Made Us.
Iain’s most recent series for the BBC include Making
Scotland’s Landscape (2010) and Men of Rock in 2011 and
Iain has spent most of this year traveling around the
world filming his new 3 part BBC 2 series “How To Grow A
Planet” for transmission on 8th February 2012.
